Can't help there; I use w3m-el for "view source" functionality.
Probably you can configure Conkeror to view source in emacsclient,
rather than using a view-source: URL?

You can use IMAP or POP to access gmail with a conventional MUA (which
can be white-on-black).  JFGI for details.
