Please ignore what I said above. I now see that
minibuffer_auto_complete_preferences is not the right variable for this
anyway.

My question was actually this: Is it possible to make the command
history behave as for example the url history in that selecting an entry
in the completion panel automatically updates the minibuffer input? And
I now realize that this can be done only by setting match_required to
false or by changing the condition whether to update the minibuffer
input to not depend on match_required (but on a new user variable,
say). But I guess you wouldn't want to change that, right?
