[Discuss] Development Platform?

There's an extension that I'd love to see developed-but I have a feeling
that there wouldn't be too many other people who would be interested in
using it.

 

So I'm interested in possibly developing it myself-although when I'm done,
I'll be more than willing to put it out there for the community for those
few who would like to use it.  I've developed in TurboC++ (many years ago),
VB.Net & PHP-and I'm self-taught in both of the latter two.

 

1) What language do I need to program extensions?  I'm guessing PYTHON.

2) Is there an IDE or should I just use a text editor?

3) Is it difficult to go from VB.net and PHP to whatever language I need to
program this in?

4) Do you have any favorite web sites to help learn what I need to know?
