This is a slightly modified version of the reply Patrick posted earlier
regarding installing Enigmail on Thunderbird 0.7. Please read the entire
mail before proceeding with the installation. If you hit problems with
the install, please make sure you have followed these instructions
before you raise a bug.
First of all: with the new extensions manager (EM), several things have
changed, and in addition, the EM is not yet complete and still has a few
bugs.
Installation:
- -------------
1. First, uninstall a previous Thunderbird installation and delete the
whole installation tree!!!
2. Delete the chrome directory in your profile directory
(Don't blame me for any errors if you don't do these 2 things!)
3. If you were previously using a nightly build, check if you have an
Extensions directory in your profile directory. If one is present, it
should be deleted prior to installing the new version of Thunderbird.
4. Enigmime _must_ be installed as administrator (or with the same
privileges as the user who installed Thunderbird).
5. Enigmime does _not_ appear under the list of extensions. It's normal
that it appears during installation and disappears immediately (this
is due to a limitation in the EM), and is the consequence of the
above. In fact, Enigmime doesn't use the new EM.
6. Enigmail is now installed in the profile of the user (the new EM
doesn't give you a choice, nor can it display any installation
dialogs). If several users share one computer, you basically need to
do this for every user.
7. Language packs may not install correctly with the new installation
mechanism. Testing is in progress on this.
Uninstallation:
- ---------------
1. It doesn't work as it should (due to a bug in the EM).
2. In order to remove Enigmail, the best way is to:
a. disable it first,
b. restart Thunderbird
c. then uninstall Enigmail.
3. Enigmime cannot be uninstalled (except by hacking some files in
Thunderbird)
New features of TB 0.7:
- -----------------------
1. Enigmail does not yet support additional identities from the account
manager. You will need to edit your prefs.js file to add the
necessary information for Enigmail to work with each secondary ID.
A help page will be written over the next week and published on the
website explaining how to do this.
2. Profile Manager support for USB: Configuring Thunderbird and GnuPG to
run on a USB stick is not related to Enigmail.
