Ummm, I suppose subscribing to the list, downloading the archive and
filtering all new posts to the same mbox file as the archive mbox so one
always has a current archive would be a bit more convenient? The entire
archive going back to Mar 2001 is ~28MB. ~15MB for the trimmed archive on
mozdev.org which dates back to July 2003.
I really can't feel sympathy for any user that downloads the entire
archive every time a search is needed.

Thanks, I'll keep my flexible search the archive on my own machine
approach. The web-based searches I've seen tend to be a bit feature poor.
Even with its all AND or all OR approach, the message search in the
Mozilla code usually does a better job than the web front ends.
BTW - all the archives on mozdev.org are searchable - you just have to do
the some of the setup for yourself. It'd be nice if mozilla.org or
sourceforge archives were so accessible.
