And why should you be able to?

You encrypted a message for the other person's public key.  Unless  
you have their secret key, you won't be able to decrypt it.

Try adding "encrypt-to <your key ID>" to your gpg.conf file, which  
will always add yourself to the list of recipients for your encrypted  
emails, and will thus get around this.
