You can't send an encrypted message to the list, nobody will be able to
decrypt it and read it...

If you want to send an encrypted message to Mr.X, you need the public
key of Mr.X, you encrypt the message using that key, and Mr.X will
decrypt it using his private key... So only the owner of the private key
that matches the public key you used to encrypt the message can access it.

Maybe you was trying to sign it, and you signed and encrypted it?
