Ubuntu 7.10 is about to reach end-of-life. No security updates will be
available after Sat April 18th.
I'd consider upgrading, as you don't appear to be concerned with being
at the cutting edge I'd recommend moving to 8.04 which is one of the LTS
(long term support) Ubuntu releases.

If you're using Thunderbird then Enigmail is available from the
repositories.
