The mouse only method...
First search google.com for whatever you have highlighted, using the "Search For Selected" item. 
Then click the the dictionary.
(back and forth... back and forth... everbody now...)

using the keyboard Ctrl-C(copy)-> (Ctrl or Shift)-F12-> then lastly Ctrl-V(paste), {whew, what a pain! Get me a whiskey... and a beer for my horse.} into the Search Terms box. 

I agree with you, I think this does need improving... all buttons should check for any selection, so maybe this weekend...
