The "highlight search terms" feature should reset to off when either of the following conditions is met:

1) focus is put on the search term field
2) a new URI is visited

After using "highlight search terms" on a page containing "a lot" of text I have to remember to click off "highlight search terms" before changing the search terms. If I forget to do this, Firefox can slow to a crawl as it attempts to highlight possible matches while I type.

This is only a problem on pages with "a lot" of text.
