I was able to reproduce the error msg from Firefox. What I did next... was to go into the Extensions 
menuitem and enable it with a rightclick on the listing for Googlebar and selected 'Enable'.

Nobody knows what 'most people' use the Googlebar for. I will say the buttons you suggest to leave in would not be enough, people would ask for their favorite button to be added, and yours removed.
