John Woods:
Thanks, but,
a. I know only too well how to create a new profile. Had to do that a week or so ago when an updated extension fouled up the existing one and could not be uninstalled, sigh. Only thirty-one extensions in use...
Copying only the bookmarks.html file from an old profile to a new one is insufficient. One should also copy:
# user.js (if it exists)
# cookies.txt
# cookperm.txt
# hostperm.1
# signons.txt
# key3.db
b. It is no longer necessary to remove existing installer versions of either Firefox or Thunderbird; the change(s) to the installer to permit overwriting were completed sometime within the past week or so, and the bugs marked as cleared in Bugzilla.
c. More important, in terms of the problem I was having, is that it went away! Why? Who knows? It is about as meaningful to ask that as it is for people to keep asking when Firefox 1.0RC will be released: Googlebar will fix the problem when it feels like it, and 1.0RC will be released when it feels like appearing.
(Actually, I understand that today's "nightly" will identify itself as 1.0. It will NOT be the RC release, but is identified as 1.0 to allow developers to test automated updating, extension/theme updating, etc.
d. Everything else.
(Thanks, again, for offering to assist; I appreciate that.)
