Ralf,
I would guess there is another extension that is not getting along with ours. You can file a bug and include a list of all extensions you have installed. 

If you would like to try and find out which other extension it is... you can also try creating a new Firefox profile and then after installing Googlebar first, followed by adding each extension and restarting Firefox until you get the problem again. 

When Googlebar is installed on Firefox 1.0PR by itself, there is no problem with the back and forward buttons. 

Here's how to create a new profile... (you can modify your shortcut to do this, and change it back when finished)
"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\Firefox.exe" -P

If this doesn't help get you running again, file  a bug.
