thanks for your advice. 
I made a new profile and checked for each single extension (*phew*). Finally, I found the extension StyleUI to be the culprit conflicting with the googlebar. Since I installed that only for testing I had no problem with getting rid of it. Now the googlebar works like it always did. I have to say that I REALLY missed it the few days it was not installed. Fortunately, it's back. :-)
