-1 on inventing a new format for storing persistent data.

+1 on providing GM-only hooks to load and save data in the Mozilla
preferences registry.  Default and restrict the branch to
"extensions.greasemonkey.userscript.SCRIPT_NAME." and only let scripts
load/save ints, chars, and booleans within their designated branch. 
On script uninstall, offer to delete the script's registry branch.
