Thanks for the recap of the problem.

Is the user script creating the onclick event, or is it present prior
to the user script?
If the user script attaches the event, you should use
addEventListener("click", monkey), or something like that. Since that
uses a function reference, or closure, there is no need for "monkey"
to be visible from the main scope (the scope of the page).
