Let me quote Jesse Ruderman here:

IIRC, the way I did it in the Thumbs extension was to test whether the
old interface exists (referencing it by its GUID).  Then I use the old
interface (by GUID) if it exists or the newest interface (referencing
it by name) if it doesn't.
