Hi Dominic,  You didn't say whether you were using Mozilla or Firebird. Mozilla does already have the feature you describle but it's broken in Ver 1.5 and not very healthy in Ver 1.4. Go to Bugzilla bug 224382 and give it a vote! If you are desparate for this feature it works well in Ver 1.3. Alternatively, if you use Firebird have a look at Mat's project "Sidesearchbar", there's a link at the top of this page.
